Diablo 4 features “pinnacle boss encounter,” not designed to be “played forever”

Blizzard has said that Diablo IV isn’t designed to be played “forever,” and will instead have an endgame boss fight that will put any level 100 build to the test, as it’s “extraordinarily challenging.”

As we inch ever closer to the launch of Diablo IV on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One and excitedly await the second open beta next month, Blizzard is revealing even more about the upcoming RPG — which isn’t “intended to be played forever.” The next entry into the Diablo franchise will be level-capped and feature an endgame boss that’s “balanced so that it’s extraordinarily, extraordinarily difficult.”

Diablo IV’s endgame is designed to prepare you for the final boss

Blizzard recently revealed some of the Diablo IV endgame content we can look forward to once we’ve finished the main campaign, but now, as reported by GamesRadar+ from a recent interview, associate game director Joe Piepiora has said that there is a limit to the game’s difficulty scaling. “Diablo IV is not intended to be played forever,” Piepiora said. “So there are creatures that you will continue to fight at higher and higher difficulties [beyond level 100], but this is content where you’ll be kind of pushing yourself to see how far you can take your build, rather than trying to reach some endless grind of rewards as time goes on beyond level 100.”

Once you’ve hit level 100 and “received the maximum power of gear” from the Nightmare dungeons, you’ll be offered a chance to reroll and respec your character. Once you feel like you’re ready for a bigger challenge, you’ll have a chance to battle it out with the final boss of the Nightmare dungeons, which Piepiora says has “been balanced to be extraordinarily, extraordinarily difficult.” It’s expected to take you a number of tries before you can defeat the unnamed creature, and because you’ll have already maximised your character to a point where defeating it is possible, the boss won’t drop powerful gear.

“That’s the point, is to say, ‘I have managed to get an extremely powerful character build together. This is my capstone, this is the goal that I have for myself within like a period of time after I’ve reached level 100,’ Pieiora said “You know, that’s the aspirational piece we want players to chase. There’s cosmetic things, there’s other rewards you can get from that encounter, but it’s not about getting more gear at that point — that’s kind of like the point of getting the gear is to fight that that particular boss.”
