Pengu maker SLAY raises $5 million to create a new social gaming platform

The company’s products have garnered over 2.5 million monthly active users

Berlin-based social gaming company SLAY has raised $5 million in a seed funding round led by VC firm Accel.

SLAY plans to use its newly secured funding to develop an immersive social gaming platform that’ll empower users and developers to create content as well as enhance engagement within its popular virtual pets game, Pengu.

The Pengu experience will be enhanced with new customisable games, characters and features for improved user interaction and socialisation, including AI capabilities. They also offer a developer platform for creating custom content and virtual worlds within the game.

Expanding the ecosystem

Founded in 2022 by co-founders Fabian Kamberi, Jannis Ringwald, and Stefan Quernhorst, SLAY’s flagship app Pengu allows users to raise digital penguins. The company’s products have garnered over 2.5 million monthly active users.

“Distribution is the hardest problem in games right now and only happens if you build a shareable platform that facilitates product-led growth,” said Kamberi. “We’ve identified a scalable playbook through Pengu, the perfect place to maximise your creativity and imagination, and have been delighted with the virality and organic growth it’s achieved.”

The funding includes participation from Laton VC, HYBE America CEO Scooter Braun, King co-founder Riccardo Zacconi, Popcore co-founder Johannes Heinze, Supercell co-founder and CEO Ilkka Paananen, and Tripledot co-founder and CEO Lior Shiff.
