Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty Expansion Was Always Going to be a Prequel Says CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has become the talk of the town since the developers completely revamped the game with Update 2.0 and also delivered a fantastic DLC through Phantom Liberty. The Phantom Liberty DLC has received glowing reviews all around the world, however, many have wondered how the expansion ended up being a prequel. We finally have an answer thanks to CD Projekt Red’s narrative director, Igor Sarzyński.

Phantom Liberty Would Never be a Continuation of the Main Story of Cyberpunk 2077

Players should know that Cyberpunk 2077 is a sci-fi RPG, based in a dystopian future. This title’s choices and consequences are its charm and have led players to unique endings in the game. With so many players ending up with different conclusions to the game, it would’ve been particularly difficult to just follow one path for the DLC, as the point of all the choices and consequences would’ve been wasted for the players. Sarzyński elaborated more on this topic through a Q&A with PC Gamer.

Sarzyński revealed that CD Projekt Red had a few “other scenarios” in consideration when working on the DLC, but at no point were they “a continuation of the main game story.” Sarzyński added that there endings for Cyberpunk 2077 are “too diverse” for the developers to just select a “single post-main story thread”. Moreover, just going with one patch would also “invalidate other people’s choices.”

Furthermore, Sarzyński spoke about how the endings for Cyberpunk 2077 were written as they “wanted them”, as they levy the players with “an uneasy feeling, forcing them to think, not providing straight answers. These feelings stick wither the players and CD Projekt Red didn’t want to “water them down” as “sometimes less is more” in the words of Sarzyński. Hence, a prequel was the only way to go for Phantom Liberty.
