MCUs harness the power of Arm Cortex-M85 core

Renesas reports its RA8 series of MCUs is the first to employ a 480-MHz Arm Cortex-M85 processor boasting a performance rating of 6.39 CoreMark/MHz. In addition to achieving over 3000 CoreMark points, the RA8 provides fully deterministic, low-latency, real-time operation.

RA8 series MCUs deploy Arm Helium technology, an M-Profile vector extension that boosts performance for machine learning and digital signal processing applications. This increase can be as much as 4 times that of MCUs based on a Cortex-M7 processor and can even eliminate the need for an additional DSP in some applications.

The devices’ integrated memory comprises up to 2 Mbytes of code flash, 12 kbytes of data flash (100,000 program/erase cycles), and 1 Mbyte of SRAM, including 128 kbytes of tightly coupled memory (TCM). Connectivity interfaces include SCI, SPI, CAN-FD, Ethernet, USB 2.0 (FS/HS), 16-bit camera, I2C, and I3C. Additionally, RA8 MCUs leverage Arm TrustZone technology and Renesas Security IP to provide cryptographic acceleration, secure boot, and immutable storage.

The first devices in the RA8 series, the RA8M1 group, are supported by the company’s Flexible Software Package (FSP) for embedded system development. FSP furnishes production-ready drivers, Azure RTOS, FreeRTOS, and other middleware stacks. It also eases the migration of existing designs to the RA8 series.

RA8M1 group MCUs are available now, along with the FSP software. Samples and evaluation kits can be ordered on the Renesas website or through its distributors.
