Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Harks Back to a Retro Classic

Nintendo has officially announced Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a NES Remix-style collection of challenges based on games from the NES library.

The game was first spotted via the ESRB ratings board, where a rating for it appeared a few days ago. Now, however, the game is official, and it’s launching exclusively for the Switch on July 18th.

The branding for Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, as well as its debut trailer, harks back to both the Nintendo World Championships event and its corresponding 1990 NES cartridge.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition features a number of NES classics like The Legend of Zelda.

The actual Nintendo World Championships were originally held in 1990, then revived in 2015 and 2017. A cartridge was made featuring challenges from the event, and it’s considered to be one of the rarest NES cartridges available.

This new version won’t work in quite the same way as that cartridge, though. Instead, it’ll feature over 150 challenges across NES games like The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Super Mario Bros.

It’ll also feature online leaderboards so that you can compare your score with players around the world, as well as couch multiplayer that supports up to eight players in Party Mode.

Strangely enough, there doesn’t seem to be any kind of corresponding real-world tournament for Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, which, considering its heritage, seems odd. Perhaps one will be announced in due course? We’ll see.

Although there won’t be a tournament, there will be a physical collector’s edition of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition available, and it’ll pack in lots of extra goodies in addition to a copy of the game.

As well as the game itself, you’ll also get thirteen art cards and five Nintendo-themed pins, as well as a 1990-style gold replica NES cartridge and stand. This one probably won’t end up being worth six-figure numbers, but who knows?
